Visa & Residence
Turkey Digital Nomad Visa — Eligibility, Requirements, Process · 2026
Turkey Digital Nomad Visa: 36 eligible countries, age 21–55, $3K+/mo income from non-Turkish clients. Document checklist, timeline, common rejection reasons.
The three eligibility filters
A digital nomad qualifies for the Turkish DNV if all three of the following are true:
- Age 21–55 at time of application.
- Citizenship of one of the 36 eligible countries (full list below).
- Income of at least $3,000/month OR savings of $36,000 held for the previous year, earned from non-Turkish employers or clients.
Failing any one of the three routes you to alternatives — typically the Tourist Residence Permit (1-year, renewable, ~80% of nationalities and ages eligible).
Eligible countries (36)
EU (27): Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden.
Non-EU European: United Kingdom, Norway, Switzerland.
Anglosphere: United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand.
Asia: Japan, South Korea, Russia.
If your passport is not on this list, the DNV is not available — but the Short-Term Tourist Residence Permit (Kısa Dönem İkamet İzni) route works for most nationalities and ages.
Documents required
The DNV applicant must submit:
- Valid passport (≥6 months remaining)
- Biometric photos
- Proof of income or savings (bank statements last 12 months, employment contract, or tax return)
- Health insurance valid in Turkey
- Proof of accommodation in Turkey (rental contract or hotel booking minimum 30 days)
- Apostilled criminal-record certificate from country of citizenship (translated by sworn Turkish translator)
- Apostilled birth certificate (in some cases)
- Application form filled at digitalnomads.goc.gov.tr
Documents in English from countries party to the Hague Apostille Convention need apostille + sworn Turkish translation. Documents in non-English languages also require sworn translation.
Process and timeline
- Day 1–5 · Remote: Apply for tax number (vergi numarası) via Power of Attorney. Apostille + sworn-translation queue starts in your home country.
- Day 6–12 · Istanbul (~5–7 days in person): Open Turkish bank account (KYC meeting). Attend Migration Office for biometrics. Submit DNV application via digitalnomads.goc.gov.tr.
- Day 13–30: Application reviewed. Digital Nomad Identification Certificate issued first (allows visa stamp at consulate). DNV residence card delivered to Istanbul address by Day 30.
Average end-to-end timeline for organized applicants: 24–30 days from documents complete.
Tax treatment
DNV holders earning salary from a foreign employer can be exempt from Turkish income tax on that salary under Income Tax Code Article 23(14), provided:
- Salary is paid in foreign currency from outside Turkey
- Employer is not a Turkish resident company
- Income is documented and traceable to a non-Turkish source
This existing exemption only covers salary income. Capital gains, dividends, and business income from foreign sources are currently subject to Turkish tax under standard rules — but the 20-year tax holiday announced April 26, 2026 and passed by TBMM on May 21, 2026 (retroactive to January 1, 2026, pending Resmi Gazete publication for legal effect) extends the exemption to all foreign-source income for new residents. See: Turkey 20-year tax holiday explained.
Renewal
The DNV is issued for 1 year initially and is renewable annually. After 5 continuous years of legal residence, the DNV holder may apply for a long-term residence permit (Uzun Dönem İkamet İzni) and, after 5 years total, may petition for Turkish citizenship through naturalization (subject to additional criteria including Turkish-language proficiency).
Common rejection reasons
- Income proof inconsistent (e.g. invoices not matching bank deposits)
- Health insurance not Turkey-valid (must cover Turkey, not just home country)
- Accommodation contract under 30 days
- Apostille missing or wrong country office
- Application submitted from inside Turkey on tourist visa without proper transition
